A Request from the Church

Brother Frederick read the record of investigation, and further claimed that the Warder Captain Ashen Newt impeded the process of the investigation by attacking and killing a soldier hired by the Church.
Lord Steward Engval first confirmed that the jurisdiction belongs to the Freehold. To assure fairness in this case, Lord Engval made a point of issuing a summons for questioning so that Ms. Hailstar may have an opportunity to refute those charges, and that the warrant of arrest will be issued only if Ms. Hailstar fails to make an appearance or submit an affidavit during one week from the issuance of the summons.

On Friday evening after the town meeting, Lord Steward Engval and I visited the house of Captain Ashen Newt of the Warders to talk with him and Lady Katherina Hailstar. Lady Marissa accompanied us as an audience. Ashen insisted us on drinking while we were in his house, saying that it is the way that things would proceed. It was pretty inexplicable to me, and I felt as if I were going to listen to a ghost story.
Engval begun to ask Katherina as to the happenings of the day of the murder of Brother John of Jhelom. Perhaps something in his words was unacceptable for Ashen. He cut in and started to lash out at Engval's call for citizens to Cove, claiming it was a betrayal to the community. As the debate got heated, Ashen finally drew his weapon and assassinated the Steward. Engval was seen in ghostly shape for a moment and soon disappeared. He has not been seen since then. The direct motive of this assassination is unknown, although Ashen repeated that Engval was a traitor. Efforts to find out his true intention was all in vain.
Right next day, I heard a towncryer's voice reporting Ashen's death. The cryer said, "Hear ye Hear ye, the vile Ashen Newt is dead! After going on a berserk rampage the villainous man attacked guards and was killed for good! The Land of Skara Brae is free of his treacherous ways!" The report was followed by a comment, "The Warders have disbanded because the villain did something so shameful as to attack Engval and belittle those who considered him a friend. He betrayed Skara and his own Warders by doing these evil things."
Although an extensive search for spirits of Engval's and Ashen's continues, no news is heard so far. As the Moongate Faire is approaching close, we should bring Engval back safely as soon as possible. Also, if the towncyer was correct that Ashen was dead "for good", then the truth would remain hidden in shadow.

A woman named Zinnia Reed from the Church of the One True Wolf carried a message to the Council in the meeting on Friday 20th. According to the message from Inquisitor Adolf Heidrech, Brother Frederick Rafskin, who has visited the Freehold several times as a messenger during last couple of weeks, was also slain and passed away for good. Miss Katherina Hailstar was accused to be the suspect of this case again. Messenger Reed claimed that the Church had enough evidence to prove Miss Hailstar guilty and that there would be another death if she was not arrested immediately. However, since the statement of witnesses on the Church's side was kept secret until the trial, the Freehold Council decided to carry out an investigation on their own to determine whether or not Miss Hailstar should be charged.

Earlier this eve, it was reported that Miss Katherina Hailstar was arrested in Magincia. The following news by an anonymous town crier was heard in the Forum of Skara Brae.
"Last eve, on the isle of Magincia, several soldiers of the Church of the One True Wolf located Miss Katherina Hailstar. After a short struggle, and several injured soldiers, Katherina Hailstar was arrested with permission from the Magincian Parliament. She has been taken to the Britannian Prison, in Trammel, and is awaiting trial. The trial will take place this Sunday, at 7pm, PST, at the Court of Truth, in Trammel!"

The Trial of Katherine Hailstar began as any such atrocious hearing would...The crowd seemed to crackle with excitement. Would the "Vampiric" Elf be sentenced for the crime of Murder? We would soon find out. As the Bailiff asked the crowd to stand for the Judges entrance there was nary a sound in the room. The judge soon invited the spectators to sit and the trial quickly got underway.
I myself had considered
the 'character' of Katherina Hailstar and as the trial began to unfold,
had no doubt that she could certainly be responsible for the deaths
of said members of the church. Her personality in our past meetings
had always struck me as slightly off kilter, if not a little 'mad'.
As the questioning and testimony of witnesses unfolded, it became clear
Two witnesses statements seem to stand out in my mind...One being the Orc Varug...Who claimed to witness Ms. Hailstar near the body of one of the newly deceased. Though, this witness was likely to be biased against the elf due to a long feud between the two races. The other witness testimony would be of Darklock. Darklock claimed to have witnessed an argument of sorts between Katherina and One of the Monks from the Church of the One True Wolf., who eventually turned up dead. According to Darklocks testimony Katherina was actually dragged out of the Great Horns tavern by said Monk, against her will...Which leads one to believe she perhaps was not strong enough to fight such a strong man, let alone kill him.
After much testimony and argument from both sides the Judge eventually ruled that it was a 'Mistrial' and said that Ms. Hailstar should be held until a more thorough trial and new judge could listen to the testimony. This motion caused quite a stir in the courtroom. Defending Lawyer Christoff begged the judge to allow Ms. Hailstar to be released from prison and remain under house arrest... But the judge would not hear of it and court was adjourned. As the crowd gathered toward the back of the courthouse to discuss details of the trial there were shouts to be heard from the Guard as Ms. Hailstar had somehow broken her chains and made a break for freedom. A short chase ensued but she was away before she could be recaptured.(there are many rumors as to "who" opened her get-away moongate).
Being of the Sosarian Knight Templars, my fellow knights and myself quickly tracked down Lady Hailstar and her Uncle at their secret hide out to question them in the interest of Fair Play and Justice. We quickly learned many details of the ladies alibi that were never presented in court that very well could prove she did not commit said crimes. We closed the evening by assuring her and her uncle that we would do everything possible to ensure "if" another trial was held that it would be a "fair" trial and wished her the best. At this point in time I have no record of whether Ms. Hailstar would be willing to come to court again. Though if I were her, I would perhaps stay far from what me and my friends have come to call it -- Monkey Court.
