An Unexpected Visitor

From Sardel's Journal

Sgt. Gertok warily walked through the Spiritwood making his way towards Sardel's shoppe. The townsfolk had warned him that recently the woods had become active with all sorts of murderers and rogues. How fitting thought Sgt. Gertok that this Sardel would live in such a forest.

The building was easy enough to find for the townsfolk had provided Sgt. Gertok with accurate directions. As he approached the shoppe he noticed that there were no lights in the windows and that the doors were locked. As small sign hung in place on one of the windows reading, "Out to Supper".

Sgt. Gertok silently cursed his luck. This affair was already taking to long. He was used taking care of problems in a timely manner and did not appreciate being dragged halfway across the realm to investigate a suspect.

Sgt. Gertok positioned himself off the to the side of the building partly concealed by the woods. He did not intend to allow Sardel to sneak away without first being questioned. Sgt. Gertok wondered why anyone would want to kill Reebdoog. He had been a decent man.

The minutes passed by and still there was no sign of Sardel. "Curses", Sgt. Gertok thought. How long did it take this man to finish a meal?

At that moment a twig snapped behind Sgt. Gertok. He spinned around to take a look but before he could register what was happening he felt something cold and solid slid into his chest. Looking down, Sgt Gertok saw an iron blade plunged into breast. The blood begin to seep out and his vision began to fade. Sgt. Gertok tried to focus his sight but all he saw was a blurry image of a man in a dark robe wearing a blue hat.

With a final gasp, Sgt. Gertok slumped over dead. His body lay there unnoticed by all but the wolves who had found a meal for the night.
