Seeds of Doubt
By Sardel
From Sardel's Journal

Nicodemus stood, staring into the cell. His eyes were bright with the fire of passion but his expression was as cold as ice. The evidence against Sardel was indeed damning. Reebdoog's axe and the badge of Sgt. Gertok had been found in his shoppe. It was easy enough to figure out what had happened. Obviously Sgt. Gertok had found the axe and thus Sardel was force to slay him. This Sardel however was a fool. Did he truly believe that the disappearance of Sgt. Gertok would go unnoticed? Why for that matter did he keep Reebdoog's axe and the badge? He must truly be insane to be that foolish.

Nicodemus had to restrain himself from rushing into the cell and exacting vengeance on Sardel. It was a waste of time to hold a trial for filth such as this. Nicodemus couldn't understand why Rydoc had brought him in alive. He would have to speak to the bounty hunter about this matter. The trial would not last long however. In the face of such evidence Sardel would be seen as guilty whether he admited it or not. The only regret Nicodemus had was that he had to wait three days for the trial. He intended to carry out the sentence once the court found Sardel guilty.

Sardel sat in his cell, eyes closed in meditation. He could feel the eyes of someone at the cell door burning a hole through his soul. This man would not listen to reason, it would a waste of breath for Sardel to plead his innocence.

A small seed of doubt began to grow in the back of Sardel's mind. What had happened on the night of the bazaar? He had not intended to consume so much wine. Was it possible that he had in fact killed Reebdoog? Never thought Sardel adamantly. Never have I killed an innocent. Only those who are unjust have found an end at my hands. The doubt grew and Sardel began to wonder if he had been clouded by wine. How does one tell who the unjust are? Sardel tried to shake away such thoughts. Meditation would not come to Sardel but he dared not face his captor in this state. Sardel sat there with his eyes closed, awaiting his trial.
